Jumbo donation is a real life-saver

September 2018

A sizeable donation from Animal Friends Pet Insurance is helping to ensure a safer future for endangered Asian elephants and the people sharing their landscape in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

“This hugely generous donation from Animal Friends will help us continue important and ground-breaking work in an area that has historically seen both human and elephant fatalities,” says Elephant Family’s Head of Conservation, Belinda Stewart-Cox, OBE. “Elephants are large, migratory animals and, as wild landscapes are converted to plantations and small holdings, it’s impossible to confine them to ever decreasing spaces. Naturally, as they seek food and water, elephants stray into cultivated areas and surprise encounters with people can lead to conflict.”

The donation will help support a highly effective early warning system that uses SMS text messaging, light signals and optical fences to alert local communities to the presence of elephants, allowing them to take evasive action especially at the peak commuting times when elephants are most active too!

About Elephant Family

Elephant Family is an international NGO dedicated to protecting the Asian elephant from extinction in the wild. In the last fifty years their population has roughly halved and 90% of their habitat has disappeared. Poaching, a growing skin trade, and demand for wild-caught babies for tourism remain a constant threat along with the deadly and escalating conflict between people and elephants for living space and food. Elephant Family funds pioneering projects across Asia to reconnect forest fragments, prevent conflict and fight wildlife crime. Since 2002 Elephant Family has funded over 170 conservation projects and raised over £10m through public art events for this iconic yet endangered animal.

The late Mark Shand was the founding force behind the charity when it launched in 2002 under the patronage of the Rajmata of Jaipur and Sir Evelyn de Rothschild. Mark Shand was an adventurer, best-selling author and conservationist who dedicated his life to the survival of the Asian elephant. His mission started in 1988 when he rescued a street begging elephant, which he named Tara, and journeyed 800km across India with her. Tara became the star of Mark’s best-selling book, Travels on my Elephant, which went on to win him Travel Writer of the Year.

TRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall are joint Presidents of the charity and most recently attended a reception for the charity during their tour of India earlier this year.

About Animal Friends Pet Insurance

Animal Friends was founded in 1998 with the sole aim of providing pet insurance as a means to help support animal welfare charities both in the UK and around the world.

This aim is at the core of what we do and so far we have donated millions to all sorts of animal charities. From local rescues run by volunteers to massive international organisations, we will consider all requests for help and consider ourselves privileged to be able to help vulnerable animals.

We couldn’t do this without our brilliant customers because every pet insurance policy brought by them enables us to help nurture and save neglected animals wherever we can.

By donating to animal charities around the world we aim to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable animals. We want our donations to:

  • Combat animal abuse and cruelty
  • Assist in the protection of rare and endangered species
  • Help conserve unique and vital habitats

Together we can make the changes in the world that animals deserve https://www.animalfriends.co.uk
