International Pressure Builds to Stop Trains Killing Elephants

International concern for India’s elephants has grown after 13 have been killed by trains within a fortnight. Elephant Family, the UK’s largest funder for the Asian elephant, has launched the Blood on the Tracks campaign encouraging its supporters to express their concern directly to the Minister of Railways. More than 100 letters have already been sent to the Minister, urging him to ensure that trains observe speed restrictions. Many more are expected to follow. The campaign is supported locally by the Wildlife Protection Society of India and the Wildlife Society of Odisha, and from the United States by the Conservation Initiative for the Asian Elephant.
