Ivory ban upheld by vote at International CITES Conference

Elephant Family were delighted to learn that the vote to uphold the ban on ivory trade across Africa was strongly favoured by 101 of 183 nations at the CITES conference in South Africa this week.

A controversial proposal to life the ban had been put forward by South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. Had the proposal been passed, it would have permitted these four nations to sell their existing stockpiles of ivory, thereby supporting the ivory trade industry.
