Conservation Action Report: The Kerala Wildlife Corridor

In time for World Elephant Day 2020, we are delighted to announce the release of the latest Conservation Action Report from the Wildlife Trust India’s project, the Kerala Wildlife corridor.

About the project

Despite being home to almost 6,000 elephants the Nilgiri Hills are a landscape dominated by a large human population.  Through the expansion of settlements, agriculture and indiscriminate economic growth, the elephants’ habitat has been subject to extensive degradation and fragmentation.

A total of 25.3 acres of land was purchased from 37 families and they were relocated based
on their prior informed consent. The purchased land was handed over to the forest
department to be notified as a part of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary.

Elephant Family funded a 2,200 acre corridor in Wayanad, Kerala, and helped to relocate villages in order to provide a protected path for 1,400 elephants.
